The Great Australian Bake Off 2017 is an Australia based television baking series. The show is influenced from the similar BBC Baking Competition, The Great British Bake Off. The series’ first premiered on 9 July 2013 on the Australian television, Nine Network. The show ran for one season and was quite liked by the audience. The presenters Shane Jacobson and Anna Gare along with judges Dan Lepard and Kerry Vincent took the game to new heights of success. On 1 April 2015 it was announced that the series had been picked up by pay television channel Life Style Food and production company Fremantle Media Australia for a second season which premiered on 13 October 2015 with presenters Claire Hooper and Mel Buttle and Judges Maggie Beer and Matt Moran.
The show is telecasted every week with a weekly elimination process. Where a contestant among all the other amateurs is eliminated to find the best all-round baker. This elimination is based on the result of an episode’s task. In each of these episodes the bakers are tasked with 3 different challenges; a signature bake, a technical bake and a show-stopper. The Judges will scrutinize and critically examine the dishes of the bakers and on that basis would declare a contestant as “Baker of the week” and also eliminate one contestant based on that very result. The first season had ten contestants.
Signature Challenge: This challenge is for the amateur bakers to show off their tried-and-tested recipes that are countryside and altogether home based and simple.
Technical Challenge: This challenge tests who can follow instructions and who has better technical knowledge and experience to produce the finished product. The bakers are all given the same recipe and are not told beforehand what the challenge will be. All the outcome dishes are tasted by Judges and they rank them on a scale that goes from worst to best. Even the Judges do not know who produced which dish which makes the challenge totally genuine with no scope of biasness.
Showstopper Challenge: This challenge is for the bakers to show off their skills and talent. The judges are looking for a bake that is both of a professional appearance but also in taste.
